EX1 to Avid Fast Import
Brad Kean sent me this.
I made an ffmpeg wrapper so it's just point and click. I figure other people might be interested so I'll temporarily post it here:
http://www.entitynine.com/xdcamex/XDCAM_EX_to_Avid_0.5.zip
If you set your import settings in Avid properly (maintain, square pixels and 709 color space), Avid will Fast Import your quicktime with no additional transcoding (besides the mp4 to quicktime translation). This isn't an Avid product and it's the first version, so use at your own risk. That said, it's worked successfully for me for getting footage into MCSoft on both PC & Mac and also into a Nitris.
Brad
Thanks Brad.
I have tested it and have to say it looks promising. So I'm looking forward to see the 720/50p version soon.

720p and ffmpeg
I just got this good news from Baptiste Coudurier who is doing the DNxHD stuff for ffmpeg.
Btw FFMpeg latest svn r11134 now supports 720p encoding and decoding.
Thats good news :)

Free Run and the Remote
I just tested setting Timecode to Free Run and using the remote to reset the time on both our EX1 cameras. And it worked just fine.

Test shots for ffmpeg
I sent some test footage to some ffmpeg folks. Hope they find it useful. I made 9-12 frames in every format the EX1 can record in frame rec mode.

One.com limits
Hello all!
My hosting provider www.one.com didn't like that I consumed to much bandwidth. So they closed my site down. I just talked to them and they said I can't do like this. But they couldn't say what I have done.
I'm going to host clips somewhere else instead.
To ONE I have to say -"You suck big time!"
I have always paid for my hosting in time, there is no limits in my contract regarding bandwidth! So don't even go there! It clearly states that there is FREE TRAFFIC on all accounts on your start page.

ffmpeg is your friend
I happened to read the license agreement for Sony EX1 Clip Browser 1.1 and saw they use ffmpeg inside it. The source file that is shipped with Clip Browser is a snapshot from 070502 so any newer versions could do whatever Sony is using it for inside the Clip Browser software. My guess is they are using it to do the unwrap to mxf thing.
Donwload win32 binary here:
http://ffdshow.faireal.net/mirror/ffmpeg/
Knowing this you can use ffmpeg as a stand alone solution for conversion. I use it for EX1.mp4 to DV25 direct conversions. And EX1.mp4 demuxing to Mpeg2 and wav and for a test we used it to make Avid DNxHD 36Mbit (Only 1080 and no sound support yet) and a wav file that makes is usable in Avid.
So there are ways of getting stuff into Avid already.
EX1.mp4 to DV25 (no need to unwrap in Clip Browser).
ffmpeg –i inputfile.mp4 –f dv –s 720x576 output.dv
EX1.mp4 to Mpeg2 and wav.
ffmpeg -y -i inputfile.mp4 -vcodec copy -f mpeg2video outputfile.m2v -acodec pcm_s16le outputfile.wav
A tip from Baptiste (ffmpeg dev) on how to do DNxHD from EX1 1080i50
ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 -vcodec dnxhd -b 185Mb -flags +ildct
-acodec pcm_s16le outputfile.mov
And my version on how to do DNxHD from EX1 1080p25
ffmpeg -i inputfile.mp4 -vcodec dnxhd -b 185Mb -acodec pcm_s16le outputfile.mov
My old solution
EX1.mp4 to DNxHD 36Mbit and wav.
ffmpeg -y -i inputfile.mp4 -vcodec dnxhd -b 36Mb -an outputfile.mov && ffmpeg -y -i inputfile.mp4 -vn -acodec pcm_s16le outputfile.wav
Here are some batch scripts of the above

EX1 Test shots Part 1
We just made some test shots from an indoor tennis hall.
The clips are in SP Mode 1440x1080/50i 25Mbit CBR. This is the mode that is most like the XDCAM HD that works in Avid.
This is the mp4 clip only, I don't think you need the meta data from our cameras.
We will test to see if it works in our Media Composers later on. (Edit: They work in a 1080i50 HDV Project)
Indoor Tennis 1 OFFLINE
Indoor Tennis 2 OFFLINE
Thanks goes out to our local tennis club for letting us take the footage.
And here is a clip in HQ Mode 1280x720/25p 35Mbit
